Photographer Robin de Puy commemorates the flood disaster of 1953

In 1953 a huge natural disaster occurred in large parts of the Netherlands, caused by a storm at spring tide. Seventy years later, photographer Robin de Puy (°1986) portrays a number of inhabitants of the island of Goeree-Overflakkee, which was badly hit. Many of them experienced the flood disaster themselves, others grew up in the shadow of what their (grand)parents experienced.

The remarkable images are accompanied by a series of observations by Maria Barnas (°1973). She sketches in striking, poetic language what the people portrayed remember from the night of the disaster and the days after. It becomes clear what role water continues to play in the lives of each of them.
